Located in a vibrant area along Los Angeles’ iconic Sunset Boulevard, 5420 Sunset is a six-story mixed-use destination that integrates multifamily residential living, retail, dining, and a flagship Whole Foods Market into a vibrant urban environment. The project transforms a dense metropolitan site into a layered residential oasis inspired by the timeless character of Southern California gardens.
A network of landscaped courtyards ranging from intimate retreats to expansive communal spaces meanders through five residential levels above structure, offering residents immersive outdoor experiences at every scale. The landscape design draws from private residential gardens throughout Hollywood and Santa Barbara, combining classic California living with a modern, tailored earthiness. A water-sensitive planting palette reinforces this identity, blending drought-tolerant and native-inspired species with sculptural forms, layered textures, and silvery-green foliage. This is paired with curated pottery, warm contemporary materials, and soft, flowing spatial geometry to create environments that feel both refined and organically evolved.
Programmed for both active and passive use, the courtyards include outdoor dining terraces, barbecue areas, reading nooks, fire pits, entertainment gardens, open lawn spaces, and a resort-style pool deck with sweeping views toward the Hollywood Hills and Griffith Observatory.
Within a dense urban context, the layered gardens create a sequence of lush, private-feeling retreats—softening the city and offering residents moments of calm, discovery, and escape above the energy of Los Angeles.
