Adjacent to The Sun Rose West Hollywood Hotel, and across the piazza, the 40-unit Pendry Residences step down Olive Dr. to Fountain Ave. The slope created the opportunity for many of the residences to have one-of-a-kind private garden terraces with spectacular city views. Ranging from 430 sq. ft. to 3,800 sq. ft., these patios feature extensive entertaining space and lawn areas, outdoor kitchens, fire bowls, raised spas, and vanishing edge pools. Color tones are grey, sand, and cream with pops of orange, which complement the architecture.
Every effort was made to create the illusion that the private terraces are planted on the ground, rather than on rooftops, so residents feel more like they have their own private yards with promontory views. Artificial turf is low maintenance and provides a constant green understory.
To create an eclectic ambiance echoing the surrounding neighborhoods, the plant palette of each terrace varies in inspiration, from desert contemporary to lush tropical, featuring Kentia palms, dragon trees, African sumac, evergreen dwarf pink plumeria, and gold mound lantana.
All residents have access to a 4th Floor central garden space, “The Park,” which is visible from the main lobby. The communal lawn and accent planting come together to descend down the changing grades of the space on Corten steel-edged steps, both blurring the lines of landscape and architecture, as well as creating topography in a thoroughly architectural space. Ficus, Japanese blueberry, kentia palms, naked coral tree, tree aloe, dwarf agave, jade, and flax lily adorn the area with layers of verdant planting.
Guests can also relax at the 14.6’ x 50’ white porcelain-lined, flush-edge rooftop pool and spa with spectacular views of the Hollywood skyline.

The exquisite masterplan boasts a French classical style with beautiful courtyard gardens and seven majestic fountains. Bordering the Phoenix Peak mountainside, the grade changes and elevations create natural vantage points for gardens with stunning views.
From the moment you enter the roundabout with the magnificent arched gateway to the property, you know you are somewhere grand. Elaborate paving and granites of different finishes make up the hardscape, while courtyard gardens surround various “neighborhoods” inside.
Just beyond the gateway lies a 105ft (32m) long, custom-designed (and fabricated by Craig Bragdy Design), hand-carved clay tile fountain, surrounded by rich parterre gardens and clipped hedges. The scene in the fountain symbolizes the nearby Yellow Sea, with patterns reminiscent of a coral reef in resplendent hues of blue.
The 14,000sf (1,300sm) water garden, at the end of the main fountain, serves as a central courtyard, providing a visual reward to those who live in the towers above. Custom patterns in the hardscape and water garden were inspired by classical motifs, decorative tapestries, and chateau ceilings. From above, the view is beautiful, but the water garden also has graduated levels of height to allow for picturesque appeal to those on the ground. There are seating areas within the fountain for guests to relax and enjoy the visual splendor.
Phoenix Palace provides plenty of areas to relax or stroll. Throughout the property, paths lead to courtyard gardens, gathering areas under structures and shade gardens. Urns and balustrades line the walkways, and flourishing Ginkgo trees abound for beauty and shade.
Everywhere you turn, you are greeted with another visual masterpiece of textures and patterns.
Resort-style living in Southern California is the inspiration behind this special residence. The five-tiered site required a focused approach to ensuring that all garden levels promote an intimate and relaxing environment. The property also features a living wall that changes with the season or occasion.
The 434-unit apartment community, Purl, sits on 6.7 acres on the ground level, with 1.4 acres of pool decks. It is the third community we designed in the masterplan of Civita; plant material on the ground level was used as a connecting thread to tie them all together.
Next to the leasing office, a large sycamore tree greets visitors. Lush, detailed planting wraps the building and opens up to a generous ground level retail opportunity.
The theme is comfortable elegance, allowing residences to feel part of the space, while the varied environments throughout the property emphasize outdoor living. The two decks with saltwater pools are unique, immersing residents in a lush, tropical oasis and a tapestry of rich, verdant colors and textures.
Building A features a raised, “Sky Terrace” roofdeck with pool and spa that gives residents a space to relax on a “floating island” nestled between the buildings. The lush planting and numerous double trunk king palms surround the pool deck. A large camphor tree next to the outdoor BBQ area and a large coral tree outside the recreation space offer residents the beauty of flowers and the function of shade.
Building B has an intimate pool area with a raised spa surrounded by flourishing planting. The surrounding Kentia palms around the pool offer dappled shade to bathers.
Throughout the community, the many multipurpose environs provide residents and their guests comfort and variety with a break from the typical urban surroundings.
Raising the bar for luxury, Trumark Urban (with design team Lifescapes International, architect HansonLA and interior designer Handel Architects LLP) developed TEN50, the first for-sale residences to be completed in Downtown LA in over a decade. Filled with incredible resort-like amenities and showcasing city views like no other, residents will feel like they are on vacation – every day of their lives.
The 6th floor lounge space, “The Fifty,” provides 13,000 square feet that flow seamlessly from the interior social areas to the outdoor gathering spaces. Multi-level gardens accommodate private parties or intimate gatherings, while natural gas fire tables, well-appointed BBQs/cooking area and a built-in entertainment bar provide ideal hangouts for city-light viewing parties. The property features a state-of-the-art fitness center and the country’s first air-ready drone landing pad.
From the modern-style, zero-edge pool and cabanas to the generous-sized therapeutic spa, every detail takes advantage of the sweeping views, and makes residents and their guests feel like they are in a resort.
Natural elements segment the areas, with a full-grown Naked Coral tree serving as a focal point; Tree Aloes, Japanese Loquats and numerous Kentia Palms, are used to create a garden oasis, and over 30 large Japanese Blueberry Trees create a beautiful natural wall. The living tapestry is created by over 1,000 shrubs of various sizes, from Blue Chalksticks, Dwarf Heavenly Bamboo to White Striped Flax Lily, with layers of water-wise materials throughout. This all combines to make a verdant, yet sustainable, roof deck environment residents will want to come home to, play and socialize in . . . night after night.
Inspired by luxury hotels, this urban oasis personifies an upscale, resort environment while exuding fun and entertainment. The high-end community appeals to everyone from millennials to empty-nesters by combining sleek, contemporary architecture with an emphasis on recreational activities and lavish amenities. Two courtyard parks feature comfortable lounge seating around fire pits, BBQs, picnic and entertainment areas. A serene koi pond, lush landscaping and meandering pathways round out the design.
The rooftop, with panoramic views, is home to a resort-style saltwater pool and spa with private cabanas, an outdoor sports bar, outdoor movie screen, a 2-lane bowling alley, massage spa, and clubhouse with fitness facility. At The Marke, we created beautiful outdoor spaces that don’t just look good, they generate a vibrant energy in a posh playground, offering everything residents need in one location.
West Park, the resort-style apartment community in San Diego, CA, features 612 apartments, three pool areas, a 10,000 sf recreation center, theater and much more. The landscape setting was designed to complement the residents’ casual, playful and active lifestyle.
Plenty of gathering places such as well-appointed outdoor lounges, rooftop decks, BBQs, shuffleboard, a pool table, multiple fire pits, shaded patios and other amenities encourage a comfortable interaction among friends, neighbors and family. A private park with a half-mile trail and exercise stations provides another opportunity for residents to fully enjoy the spacious areas offered at West Park.
Three uniquely designed saltwater swimming pools with cabanas and comfortable chaises and tables provide both ample shade as well as opportunities for private conversation and relaxation. The contemporary design character emphasizes the colorful, verdant and water-sensitive landscape environment, while the cohesive palate of hardscape and softscape materials harmoniously combine to create a community that promotes a resort lifestyle experience.
