The Story Brings it to Life: The Final Layer of Pool Design

Back to All Media

In the final installment of our series on resort pool area design, we move from vision to realization. Earlier posts explored foundational planning and the guest experience—how spatial layout and use zones form the bones of the environment, while amenity layers breathe life into the space. Now, we bring it all into focus: giving tangible form to the diagram, infusing it with detail, color, and texture that express the resort’s identity.

From Concept to Canvas: Completing the Picture

Think of it like putting the finishing touches on a painting of a tree. Until now, we’ve mapped out its trunk and branches—our circulation routes and activity zones. Now we’re adding leaves and blossoms, transforming a skeletal diagram into a fully formed, experiential environment. And that means revisiting the overall design story—because every detail we add must reinforce it.

A great resort immerses guests in a cohesive narrative—from the moment they arrive to when they walk into their guest room. When that story carries consistently through every aspect of the property, it allows guests to truly disconnect from their everyday lives and feel transported. The pool area, in particular, must feel like a natural extension of this story—whether the design leans historic, tropical, modern, or something else entirely.

We begin shaping that story with big-picture gestures: the form of the walks, the outline of planting zones, the placement of buildings, and of course, the pools themselves. These shapes do more than serve a function—they evoke feeling. A formal, symmetrical layout creates a vastly different atmosphere from curving, organic paths. But great design always balances emotion with usability. Expressive shapes must also stand the test of time—feeling iconic, and not so trendy that they will look out-of-date before the concrete is even dry.

The Power of Pool Shape and Layout

Durango Casino & Resort Bel Aire BackyardThe form of the pool is especially powerful. Its shape directly influences mood, spatial use, and guest interaction. Straight or gently curving edges optimize seating layouts, making it easy to line up chaises. Curved lobes or notches, by contrast, define more intimate “districts” within the pool—ideal for quiet conversations or lounging away from the crowd.

The interior layout of the pool adds yet another layer of intention and activation. Extended entry steps can double as stadium-like seating for socializing and soaking in the view. Benches tucked into curved edges act as in-water lounges or conversation nooks, while wide, shallow shelves invite guests to lounge on chaises partially submerged in the water (when permitted by code).

The design and selection of hardscape materials and architectural features are key to shaping the guest experience. The color, texture, and finish of paving, pool edges, walls, and other elements offer a tactile layer of detail that ties the visual narrative together. Built structures like cabanas extend the resort’s architectural language and help define intimate, scaled spaces—creating ‘neighborhoods’ that feel both dramatic and inviting.

The Soul of the Space: Trees and Softscape

Nothing shapes a guest’s first impression of the pool area and makes it an inviting and comfortable space to enjoy more than the softscape.

Trees, with their dramatic vertical presence and canopy, define space, frame views, provide shade, and layer together with the architecture to bring a sense of balance and softness to the scene. Their variety, size, placement, and species selection speak volumes—immediately signaling whether the resort is a tropical retreat, Tuscan villa, desert oasis, or modern estate. Thoughtful tree composition can quietly, but powerfully, convey this story.

Below the canopy, layered understory plantings—shrubs, ground covers, flowers, and turf—further shape atmosphere. Their size and massing can immediately make a space feel quiet and intimate or lush and open. Color and bloom cycles can add a much-desired seasonal interest. Whether the goal is a clipped formal garden or a lush jungle vibe, the planting palette is one of our most expressive tools in creating a visually layered environment.

Water in Motion: Fountains as Sensory Anchors

While we’ve explored the art of water features in blogs before, it’s worth underscoring their unique impact in the pool environment. Like palm fronds rustling overhead, the sound of moving water adds a vital layer to the sensory experience. Fountains, whether integrated into the pool or positioned nearby, animate the space with sparkle, rhythm, and a subtle sense of life. Their motion draws the eye, while their sound tempers the ambient noise and enhances a feeling of escape. In hot climates, that soft, continuous splash even creates a perceived cooling effect, enhancing guest comfort.

Furnishings and Final Touches: Making It Livable

Finally, no scene is complete without the elements that allow the guest to sit down and relax: furniture and accessories. Chaises, daybeds, sofas, chairs, tables, and umbrellas take an otherwise empty space and make it feel full, usable, and exciting. Their color, form, and texture dapple the spaces with life. Pottery builds on this with added sculptural interest that can serve as art, screening, or spatial definition. In envisioning all of this, it is key that we work with the project’s interior design team so that from inside to out, the entire guest experience is cohesive.

Spaces Brought to Life Through Collaboration

We cannot do this on our own – collaboration is key. Partnering closely with owners and design teams, we approach each project with fresh eyes and a shared commitment to excellence. That dialogue—the interplay of creative vision, practical insight, and mutual trust—is what allows us to shape outdoor spaces that are not only beautiful, but deeply memorable.

The Joy in the Process

While this overview only scratches the surface, it reflects our decades of experience working in a range of styles, markets, climates, and budgets. Every resort we work on is unique, but they share the same foundations on how we approach and build a thoughtfully designed pool area that integrates seamlessly with the resort and elevates the guest experience.

It’s a process we love. One that keeps us inspired. And one that has helped us create some of the most successful and iconic resorts around the world.
